Lawn Renovation

From £640

There is a large middle ground between a lawn that needs feeding and a lawn that needs digging up, and almost everybody in it gets sold new turf. Renovation covers that ground: heavy scarification, hollow-tine aeration, overseeding with a fescue and ryegrass mix chosen for the light your garden actually gets, and a sandy loam top dressing worked in.

It happens in one visit in September or early October, takes most of a day on a typical Guildford back garden, and the lawn looks worse than when we arrived for about a fortnight. By the following May it is a different lawn, at roughly a third of what returfing would have cost.

We will tell you when it is not the right answer. If more than about half the surface is bare, or the levels are wrong, or the soil underneath is builder’s rubble — which on new-build estates around Guildford it very often is — renovation is money spent twice and you want returfing.
